Vaz criticises independent report

Keiht pictured with Karen Godden's family

The family of Karen Godden, who was murdered by a mental health patient in August 2007, met with  Keith Vaz to discuss the publication of the independent investigation into Karen's death. Keith is pictured here with members of Karen's family, Rachel Mason, Derrick Hicks

Karen Godden was killed in August 2007 by Kelvin Trenfield, a paranoid schizophrenic who had been discharged from a mental health unit only months before the attack.

The original internal inquiry conducted by Leicester NHS, which found Karen's death to be neither 'predictable' nor 'preventable,' was described as a 'travesty' by her family. The independent inquiry has found that whilst elements of his care should have been different, it is not certain that any changes would have prevented Karen’s death.

Keith said:

"It has more than 2 years since Karen Godden was brutally killed and I still do not believe that her family have received adequate answers.”

“I am disappointed that this report does not hold the health authority responsible in the way that I and the family think it should.”
