The election of the USA's first black President, Barack Obama, to the highest office in the country has been an inspiration to people worldwide. Hamilton Community College has used this monumental occasion as a tool to teach pupils about the importance of politics, participation and race. Hamilton Community College has linked up with a school in Kentucky to compare notes on how politics works and the differences between the two countries. The pupils are producing a book detailing President Obama's first 100 days in office. Local MP Keith Vaz will be visited Hamilton Community College on Friday June 12 to discuss politics and the importance of the election of President Barack Obama. The students have already had discussions with several high profile figures in US politics, including a video conference with Senator Dorsey Ridley. "It is absolutely fantastic that young people are being encouraged to talk about politics in this way. I cannot stress just how important it is that young people engage in politics both nationally and internationally." "Politically this year has been monumental, especially with the election of America's first black President." "Last week we witnessed the shocking election of two BNP members to the European Parliament. Initiatives such as this provide the perfect opportunity for young people to learn about the issues surrounding race and politics." | |
